1. What martial arts styles are taught at Akitsukai Martial Arts Academy?
We specialize Toushi-Kan Karate founded by Kancho Shigeki Umemoto, and Kenjutsu Iaijutsu (Eishin Ryu, Shinkage Ryu) often taught in independent koryu groups (organizations, dojos, or study groups). Our classes emphasize discipline, self-defense, and the rich traditions of martial arts.
2. Do I need prior experience to join?
No prior experience is required. Our programs are designed to accommodate all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners.
3. What ages do you teach?
We offer classes for both kids (ages 7 and up) and adults. We encourage family participation.
4. What should I wear to my first class?
Comfortable, loose-fitting athletic wear is fine for your first class. Once enrolled, students can purchase a uniform from recommended online distributors.
5. How long does it take to earn a black belt?
The journey to a black belt depends on your dedication and consistent training. On average, it takes about 4-5 years with regular practice and successful progression through the ranks.
Class and Training Questions
6. How are classes structured?
Classes typically start with a warm-up, followed by skill-building drills, partner exercises, and kata (forms). Advanced classes may also include sparring and weapon techniques.
7. Are there separate classes for beginners and advanced students?
Currently we only offer a combined class of beginners, intermediate, and advanced students, but ensure students' progress at their own pace.
8. Do you offer private lessons?
No, private lessons are not available at this time.
9. What equipment will I need?
For Karate, students need a gi and a belt. For Kenjutsu, a wooden sword (bokken) is required along with a hakama and Kenjutsu Gi top.
10. How often should I train?
We recommend training consistently as often as your personal time allows. We offer one class a week but plan on offering more classes in the near future to help in student development.
Membership and Pricing Questions
11. What are your membership options?
We offer flexible memberships, including monthly plans and discounted packages for families or long-term commitments.
12. Are there contracts?
We do not require long-term contracts. You can cancel or adjust your membership with proper notice.
13. Is there a trial period?
Yes! We offer a free trial class for all new students.
14. Are there additional costs?
In addition to membership fees, students will incur costs for uniforms, testing, and special workshops. These will be communicated clearly in advance.

16. Do you participate in tournaments?
Yes, we prepare students for local and national tournaments, though participation is optional.
17. Do you offer self-defense classes?

Logistics and Policies
18. What is your cancellation policy?
We kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for class cancellations. Membership cancellations require 30 days’ written notice.
19. What safety measures do you have in place?
Safety is our top priority, and we enforce strict dojo etiquette.
20. Where is Akitsukai Martial Arts Academy located?
We’re currently located at the Amery Community Center, with plenty of parking and easy access.
